clubEFL – the future in education by Anna Athanasiou

A topic that we often discuss with our students in English classes is whether computers will replace teachers in the future and how this will happen. With clubefl I have come to  understand that the future of education lies on both teachers and students exploiting the potential of computers at any available time. I can even vision how schools will be in fifty  from now with similar clubs in Physics, Biology, Maths and every other subject being the norm.

My name is Anna Athanasiou and I have been using clubefl for only a month!! but I am so excited with the infinite possibilities it offers that I have already been addicted to it. I genuinely feel sorry for the students who graduated and did not have the chance to work with clubefl.

When parents came to be informed of the new technology, they  were all enthusiastic and willing to learn to speed up the process. I had to admit to them that this is such an innovative and challenging method  that has inspired me like nothing else since my studies in the States, where  everything seemed new and challenging to my eyes, coming from the small island of Cyprus.

I believe that there is no need for me or my teachers to go to any other seminars or workshops anymore; we only need training in clubefl as it makes us feel powerful and versatile teachers. My older students started grumbling when I first asked them to go to their homework and expect surprises because they thought there would be more work. Now if I don't have time to add something from youtube they complain. For me it is really rewarding to check on them at night, sometimes close to midnight, and see that they're there doing their homework. Learning can really be fun. I feel that clubefl was the missing link for my scool in order to achieve its educational goals with less effort and more success.

I feel the need to express my many thanks to Demetres Aivazoglou who 'initiated' me into clubefl and has always been patient with my silly questions as I was a complete computer illiterate 'student' for him when I joined the club but he has made me so confident and proud of my computer skills in such a short time.

I have been using Clubefl for more than 8 eight years, first in our computer lab and then in the classroom as part of my teaching. I find it not only innovative and creative but perhaps above all the most motivating tool that I can use to engage my students. The quizzes together with the videos and the songs, the movie trailers with the vocabulary exercises, the blogs with posts even from our youngest learners, the messages, the homework, the blog stories, they are all there to make both teaching and learning a fun experience. To some, this platform may seem complicated or difficult to use but this is absolutely wrong. It's easy even for people who have never used a computer before. Both the students and the parents are enthusiastic about it , students feel they learn in a way that suits their generation while parents are happy that their kids learn English the fun way. Both my students and I have come to a point where we can't imagine ourselves having a class without clubefl, we are sort of 'addicted' to it. Last but not least, as a person who sees teaching more as a vocation than a mere job, I feel that  the club helps me fulfil my role as a teacher.

Clubefl evaluation by Nina Christou

Using Clubefl within my teaching has opened up a world of creative possibilities that have enriched my teaching as a whole. I am no longer limited to ready-made activities provided by others but can now create my own tailor-made ones to suit my students’ individual needs and wants, through the countless games, quizzes, stories etc. that can be personally set up. The vast range of activities available through Clubefl provides the teacher with immense variety to constantly engage the learner’s interest through a medium that is relevant to the modern student. This has been my own experience. In other words, in this day and age of modern technology where students are constantly communicating with others via the internet and mobile phones, the only way for teachers to stay connected with their students is via Web 2.0, within a safe environment which is what Clubefl provides. The enthusiastic response of my students has shown me this.

Personally, my favourite parts of Clubefl include the quizzes that can be set up based on personally chosen videos from other reputable sites to provide interesting and engaging aural as well as visual stimulation for listening practice at any level; secondly, the students’ individual blogs, or digital portfolios that allow the student not only a platform for their own creativity and expression, but a platform that can be viewed by a huge audience, thus encouraging the student to take pride in a form of publishing their work through forming their own individualised blog.

My teaching experience has proven to me that a school that wishes to be considered relevant to the modern student must use Web 2.0 technology to connect and stay connected to their students who are growing up in a world of technology and have embraced that technology in their lives. Without this technology, we teachers are ‘dinosaurs’ slowly becoming extinct in a world that will leave us behind.

I've been teaching for more than 30 years and I've always been trying to improve my teaching methods for my students' benefit.
 
During the recent years we are experiencing a revolution in everything through the use of technology which has given us the opportunity to create material and publish it online. Searching different tools to help me update my lessons 
 
I came across clubEFL about 5 years ago. What I saw then was more than I could understand and it took me some time to realise how powerful this platform was. At the same time clubEFL was being updated all the time to include whatever new was available on the  web. Now I believe that it is unique, offering teachers and students more than they could imagine.
 
This is our own area where we can make quizzes, lessons, blogs, communicate with our students and their parents, send them their homework or messages, read what they have written and correct it online, chat or use the material which is already there and much more…. and all this in a safe environment with no ads which could cause different problems…
 
The teachers have been trained and despite their first opposition to doing extra things, they finally realised what an asset this is for their teaching and how privileged they are to use Web2 instead of just inserting a CD in the computer.
 
Our clients, parents and students, are very impressed by what we do, they trust us and they realise that we are ahead of the others-they have learned what using technology in teaching means and feel confident for their choice. They spend time with their children doing quizzes or reading and listening to stories during the weekend and they enjoy every minute of it.
 
Our most recent project is our classes' blogs, where students publish their own material using English outside the classroom in a very creative way-and all teachers know what creativity can do for their students!
 

In my school we know that we are offering the best educational tools to our students and teachers and we cannot imagine our classes without clubEFL: it is easy, safe, creative, entertaining, revolutionary!!!

Clubefl Evaluation by Andromachi Grigoriadou

I have watched this video many times but it still amazes me. I will quote one line the child says that is a message to all of us,

"If you don't know the Internet, you can't be my teacher"

The moment I started using CLUBEFL I couldn't even imagine teaching without including it in my lesson plan.

When using such a platform everything is just a "click" away: homework, on line stories, quizzes that I can design and satisfy my students' needs, songs, vocabulary practice, writing practice since the students can write their stories, essays etc. and post them on their blogs, messages that the students and the teachers can send to each other and the list goes on. So if the operation of our school has changed? It certainly has!

The students’ reaction is definitely positive as well as their parents’. Even if some parents were sceptical at the beginning because they were afraid of the Internet when they realized how autonomous learners their children have become, they are now true supporters.

As for the students’ performance, it has changed for the better as they are now more motivated. Take for example writing, when students write just for their teacher then sometimes they don’t try so hard but when they know that their piece of writing will be posted on their blog and that their peers will read it then they do their best and are anxious of their peers’ comments as well as their teacher’s.

All in all Web.2 is undoubtedly in our lives  and it is still changing.

CLUBEFL is an educational Web.2 platform that has everything a teacher or a student needs to present, design, communicate and practice and is, as mentioned above, just a “click” away!
